Newry, Mourne and Down is a strong, safe, and vibrant place, and peaceful and thriving communities are at the heart of this.
Since 1995, the European Union’s PEACE programme has supported people from different backgrounds and communities to come together to build a more peaceful society in NI. Thanks to funding, and the projects supported in the NMD area, cross-community relationships have grown stronger, and thousands of people have benefited from taking part.
PEACEPLUS is the next phase of the PEACE programme. From 2023 to 2027, councils will have more funding to continue to build peaceful and thriving communities. We’re developing an action plan to help us do this.
This theme will include support to help transform areas, buildings, facilities, and spaces so that local services are improved, and people and communities have more opportunities to come together and take part in activities.
This theme will support many areas including developing community leaders, supporting communities to come together, projects to address specific needs (e.g. social needs, health, mental health), along with community events and festivals.
This theme will support people to celebrate the rich diversity of cultures and people that live in NMD, including those from other countries. It will also help to build mutual understanding, trust and respect between people, while also reducing prejudice and intolerance.
Everyone living in Newry, Mourne and Down can take part in PEACEPLUS. That’s why it’s important that as many people as possible help us to create the Plan.
